Proto-Semitic *ELLA --- *ALLA Greek
The similarity between Greek and Hebrew is obvious. In both languages exist of course more words to express the same concept. For example the more common Hebrew "awal" (but, yet).
Some scholars see this Hebrew word as a contraction of ל א and א ם ,
pronounced " im lo" meaning " if not ". This is not quite convincing as the difference
between " if not " and " yet " is significant .
Note:
- Proto-Semitic.
This root is found in Aramaic ( various branches ) "ella", that is identical to Hebrew . As already mentioned, there is a supposition that in Hebrew "ella" is a contraction of two brief words, "im + lo " that stands for " if not". This is a different message and the sound is too far off. In Aramaic "ella" would be a contraction of "an + la", which as to the sound is less improbable, but the message is still neatly off. Arabic has 'illà" and also here a, again different, contraction is supposed.
So we stick to Proto-Semitic " א
ל
א * Aleph L Aleph".
