Proto-Semitic *‛ARAV --- ERA-NNOS < ERA-O Greek

This Greek root has become a very important one in most modern languages with the creation of the word "ερως , eros". This already in classic Greek meant "love, passion, desire".

Note:
  • Greek and Hebrew. Just as in entry GR 1169 (Hebrew 0172) we find in Greek an N where Hebrew has a B/V. It occurs in Greek that a consonant "M", a full labial, is changed into an "N". An interesting example is the word "μ α ν α, mana = mamma, mother." But in this case the "N", that with the adding of the suffix has been doubled, is a diversifying extension of the older root on which "erannos" is based, that is found other words. These are "εραω , erao" and "εραμαι , eramai", that both say "to love and desire".

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This root in seen in Aramaic " מ ע ר ב, me‛arav = pleasing", a narrow but not too unrealistic basis for a hypothesis for Proto-Semitic "*ע ר ב, Ayin R B" .

Note:
  • Indo-European. No etymology has been established for the so important Greek root of the many words like English "eros, erotics"! Consequently we have no hypothesis outside Greek.
