Proto-Semitic *‛ATID --- ETI Greek
In both languages we have the basic root "et" with an " I " added, expressing a concept of time. They are both related to the words seen in entry E 0307 (Hebrew 0194) that deals with the concept of time or a period of time.
Note:
- Hebrew. This same word also means "ready", obviously for what is to happen or be done soon.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. We refer to the entries E 0307 (Hebrew 0194), E 0955 (Hebrew 0195) and GR 1177 (Hebrew 0201). This root is also found in Aramaic, Syriac and Arabic and was probably already used in Proto-Semitic : "*ע ת ד". The vowels are uncertain, and we maintained the Hebrew version with a second vowel " I ", that indeed may have been in use in Proto-Semitic.
Note:
- Greek. The concept of time for a root "et" in Greek is clearly seen in the word "ετος , etos", which stands for "year". To express "ready", that is the second but well-related meaning of the Hebrew word "‛atid" , Greek uses another word, perhaps also based on "et" : "ετοιμος , hetoimos". See entry GR 1177 (Hebrew 0201).
Note:
- Greek. We have no indication from outside Greek that would justify a specific hypothesis for Indo-European.
