Proto-Semitic *DOQ --- DIK- Greek

We have chosen the word "bediuq" in Hebrew, because it is very common , but in fact it is composed of the prefix "B" and the word "dièq", that indicates "exactitude, rightness".
The corresponding verbs are " ד ו ק , doq" ( modern " ד ק , daq") and " ד י ק , dièq", for "to be exact".

Note:
  • Greek. The Greek word covers a vaster ground than the Hebrew one . It includes the concept of "according to the norms" , besides that of "exactness" as in Hebrew . This difference is not such as to prevent the conclusion that the existing similarity, may be based on a common origin in the far past. The root is "D I K".

Note:
  • Hebrew expresses concepts in the realm of justice with another root : "ד י ן , D Y N ". One remarks that the first two components are the same as those seen in "ד י ק , D Y Q ".

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. The roots "D W Q" and "D Y Q " seen in Hebrew, have their cognate in Aramaic " ד י ק, dayèq = to reckon exactly". This gives some basis, be it a narrow one, for the hypothesis that Proto-Semitic, as so often, already used the same root we find in Hebrew. "*ד ו ק, D O Q" and perhaps also the newer "*ד י ק, D Y Q."

Note:
  • Hebrew and Greek. Apparently Greek maintained one root to cover both exactness and justice, whereas Hebrew diversified , using two partly different roots for the two concepts .

Note:
  • English " dicast " , a loan word , refers to an old Greek term for judges and jurors in ancient Athens , as " person who says what is right " . Also in modern Greek a "δικαστης , dikastis " is a judge .
