Proto-Semitic *BATHÀ --- *BATT- Greek

The similarity between roots in Greek and Hebrew often is impressing, even if the further build-up of words on the basis of related roots is very different. In older Hebrew those differences have been less, but the certainties are smaller on account of the lack of written testimony.

Note:
  • Greek with these and other words gives composites of a word "*batta" that no more exists, but undoubtedly meant the same as the well-nigh identical Hebrew root.

Note:
  • Greek and Hebrew in some roots that are not far from the one of this entry, are near as well : Hebrew "basar", "bissèr", saying "to declare, inform or announce", corresponds with Greek "bazoo = to say, declare" . See entry GR 1145A (Hebrew 0281A), IN PREPARAZIONE.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. For these two related Hebrew verbs there seem to be no cognates known in other Semitic tongues. On the pure basis opf their existence scholars have hypothesized a Proto-Semitic "*ב ט , B TH ", that is in harmony with the similarity of this entry.

Note:
  • Indo-European. We have no information from other groups of languages to make a hypothesis different from Greek.
