Proto-Semitic *GHAN-I-T --- *AI-GAN-E-È Greek
This Greek word probably is enjoying an initial confirmative vowel A, called "alpha epitaktikč". This does not explain why there is also an I with this alpha. Usually this is an accentuating of the weight of the used vowel, mostly an " A " . And the similarity is strong with Hebrew. The final part of "ghanit" is just a suffix for a feminine noun.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. This Hebrew noun is of uncertain origin. If, as some suppose it has its name as " the flexible one" from an old meaning of the root " GH . N (Y)", it is related to Aramaic, Syriac and Arabic where that root is also found. Proto-Semitic would then probably have had this same root. "*ח נ(י), GH N (Y)".
Note:
- Indo-European. There is no known etymology for the Greek word of this entry. Some have tried to link it to "aix" = "goat", but that is just a wild shot. No indication for cognates in Indo-European tongues seems available.
