Proto-Semitic *GHEREM --- *GRI-P-OS Greek

The main difference between the two roots is that between P and M, both labials. And an M, upon opening the lips suddenly, passes into P.

It is also possible that in this case the Hebrew " M " and the Greeek " P " are not related, but have been added, each in its time and place, to an original two consonant combination "GH R" or "G R".

Note:
  • Greek It is interesting to see that Greek changed in this word the P into PH , and that both versions were used . Then Greek has a number of words with "grip-" that indicate actions regarding "fishing", but also of "obtaining" in different circumstances. These may well be figurative uses oof the concept of "fishing".

The words "gripos, griphos" are seen as derived from a root "GRI-", that is related to the word "gerron", that indicates "wattlework", and may refer to a shield , a partition, a grate or anything wattled. This leads to a indication of an original two consonant combination "G R", that with the use of a vowel, expressed the concept of plaiting or wattling. But this remains far from certain.

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic This Hebrew root is similar to another one with a number of interrelated messages, that are far away from the fishnet, such as "to ban, devote, exterminate, consecrate etcetera". "GH R M " in the sense of this entry is encountered in Aramaic "*ח ר מ א , gharama = net" and has a cognate in Arabic "taghrimah = lace(work)" and perhaps also in "gharama = to perforate". It may have been present in Proto-Semitic "*ח ר ם , GH R M".
