Proto-Semitic *GHUM --- *HUM- Old Norse
We found this particular case of similarity at considerable geographical distance. It is too interesting not to be mentioned. And that distance has certainly been smaller in some very far past.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. The origin of this Hebrew word is unknown, though some try to link it to the similar word for "hot, warm", considering the meaning as "something burned brown, black". It is considered to have been used already in Proto-Semitic, the root being "*ח ו ם , GH W M". With the meaning of "hot" it was certainly present in Proto-Semitic, but we have no further indication for the meaning "dark".
