The root is very short, just like "P W", but both in Greek and Hebrew it builds an adverb of place, with as only difference that the Hebrew word "here" is more defined than Greek "where". In the development of a language this is not surprising.

 

To this we add that "where?" in Hebrew uses the same root, in the word " א י פ ה , eipho". In this word the indication of place is in the P, as in the others. The origin is common between the two languages.

 

Scholars see "eipho" as composed of "ei = where" and "po = here".

 

Note:
  • Proto-Semitic. This brief root is found in Phoenician and Ugaritic, that like Hebrew express the concept of "here" with a single consonant " פ , P ". It may well have been present in Proto-Semitic: "* פ, P ". In our comparison we maintain a vowel as seen in Hebrew.
