Proto-Semitic *PAG --- *PAG-OS Greek
This Hebrew word is used as such in the Bible. In modern language it has contracted into "
פ
ג , pag " and expresses a message of : "to finish, faint". The concept of "coldness" is no more there.
Note:
- Greek "παγος , pagos" besides "ice" and "frost" also is used for "rock, salt(-crystal), clotted blood". The similarity is there, but the common origin might still not be certain, if one language, Greek, would have a point of departure "hardness" and the other, Hebrew, "weakness".
Anyhow, if you are on holidays with your kids in Greece, you will buy them an excellent "pagoto", which is an ice-cream.
Note:
- Hebrew. It is possible though that the meanings of "cold" and of "weakness" use an identical root by chance. The first one, as shown, corresponds with Greek, but the second one with Germanic through Dutch, as seen in entry E 0317 (Hebrew 0742).
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. This root in the sense of this entry is found in Syriac "פ ג , to be cold" and with the common changes, in Arabic "faja = to be cold". It may well have been present in Proto-Semitic: "* פ ו ג , P W G, pog" or "* פ ג , P. G" , pag".
Note:
- Indo-European. Information about possible cognates with the message of "coldness" in other branches of Indo-European seem not available. The comparison remains between Semitic and Greek, which is not a rare phenomenon.
