Proto-Semitic *QAL, *QOL --- *KŎL Greek
The two Greek words have prefixes, of which "EU-" is a positive one, and "DUS-" a negative one. Consequently "eukolos" confirms that something is "*kolos" and "diskolos" says it is not. There is no doubt that a word "*kolos" has existed, but is has disappeared. This word was in all probability related to the Hebrew word "qal" of this entry.
Note:
- Greek scholars have not found an etymology for the couple "eükolos" and "düskolos". The basic meaning would anyhow have been "good-easy" for "eükolos" and "un-easy" for "düskolos". The indication from Greek is "*K O L-". From here the way from Indo-European has not been established.
Note:
- Proto-Semitic. This root is also used in Aramaic ק ל י ל , qalil , ק ל י ל א, qalilà = easy, light. Syriac has "ק ל , = to be light. Arabic qalla and Ethiopian qalala both stand for "to be light, slight, swift".
This root may have been present in Proto-Semitic two consonant "*ק ל , Q L" as well as the three consonant "*ק ל ל , Q L L" . For the comparison both "*QOL" for a noun as used in Hebrew for "lightness, levity" and "QAL" as the adjective are presented.
