Proto-Semitic *SAPAQ --- *ZAPAS Russian
This Russian word gives the result of the action, the Hebrew word the action itself. The final S-found in Russian corresponds with the final Q-sound in Semitic. But then this Hebrew verb "sippeq" is a so-called intensive form of basic "sapaq", that stands for "to be sufficient, suffice", a natural origin for the concept of "to provide", that is registered in Post Biblical Hebrew, but in all probability was used in Biblical times.
Note:
- Hebrew. There are other words with a root "S P Q" that have quite different meanings, but
there is in fact some confusion regarding the use of the two letters that have an S-sound, the
Samekh and the Sin.
We find :
ס
פ
ק | to clap hands beat |
ש
פ
ק | to clap hands, beat |
and also | |
ס
פ
ק | to provide |
ש
פ
ק | to be sufficient |
Note:
- Proto-Semitic . This root is also seen in Aramaic and Syriac "ס פ ק , sephaq" and may have a cognate in Arabic "tsafaqa = he struck the hands". It may well have been in use in Proto-Semitic "*ס פ ק , S P Q".
